Why… What is your why? Actually, take a moment to dig deep and ponder this. Why do you wake up every single morning and live YOUR life? It doesn’t matter what your why is. As long as it’s truthful. It doesn’t matter if it’s your grandfather or even money. It is essential to find your why and implement it into your life. I promise that if you find your “why” you will excel in every aspect of your life in measures that you never could have imagined.
The “why” of WhyWear is improving the lives of the families and children at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
I am the head of sales for WhyWear. WhyWear is the official partner of the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and is the only company in the nation that is allowed to put the UI Children’s Hospital logo on our apparel. In just over 90 days of business, WhyWear has had over $15,000 in sales and on February 9th we donated $1,658 to the UI Children’s Hospital. This company is made up of 3 of my friends Rian Weber, Austin Coates, and Tyler Thorson.
In the state of Iowa, we pride ourselves on two things: cheering on the Hawkeyes and caring for our fellow Iowans. The now famous, “Iowa Wave” is a great example of this. Iowa has a special sense of community and cares for others, unlike any other place. The foundation of our brand lies in this care for others. We want you to “Wear Your Why”.
WhyWear chose the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital as our first official partnership. Seeing the impact that cancer can have on a person and their family inspired this partnership. We believe a family should only have to worry about helping their child survive and not worry about paying the next medical bill. With your support, we believe that we can help these children and their families live a healthier, happier life.
WhyWear currently in contact with other Big Ten universities with future plans of partnering with hospitals that the schools are associated with. We also have been in contact with retailers who want to sell our famous Iowa Chopper Mittens.
These mittens are made out of genuine deerskin leather, are 100% waterproof, and have one unique feature that you can’t find in any other mitten. There is a glove inside of the mitten. So every pair has finger slots that keep your hands warm at all times. The mittens are also laser engraved in Dubuque, Iowa.
Every one of our Iowa designs pays special tribute to the children in the hospital. We offer quality apparel with a purpose. We want you to look good and feel good knowing that your new gear is helping someone who needs it.
Help us improve the lives of others one WhyWear product at a time.
My Favorite Story…
Being a part of this company has provided me with so many opportunities to interact with incredible people. On December 8th, 2018 WhyWear was given the opportunity to sell our products at Theisens in Dubuque, Iowa. That day we had a drawing for paying customers to enter a chance to win tickets to the Iowa vs. UNI basketball game. Around 5 o’clock that Saturday, a couple approached our table. They were in their 60’s and dressed to impress in all of their Iowa Hawkeye gear.
The husband walked up with a big jolly smile and said, “We have seen you all over Facebook and we absolutely love what boys are doing!”
They bought a ton of our apparel and as we were about to say our goodbyes and the wife stood still and her voice started to shake when she spoke.
She said, “Boys, you have no idea how much you doing this means to our family.”
She slowly reached around her neck and pulled out a necklace. It was a gold necklace that had a silver clasp.
With her hands shaking as much as her voice she slowly opened up the clasp and said, “These are our two baby boys who passed away in the hospital many years ago.”
I’m not going to lie and say that my eyes didn’t start to fill up with tears as we exchanged hugs with the couple and said our goodbyes.
We were supposed to pick the winner of the drawing for the basketball tickets that night but we put it off, and the same thing happened on Sunday. On Monday, we finally drew one name out of about 500 names in that bowl full of tickets. I bet you can guess who’s name we pulled out. You guessed it, that joyful couple.
We gave them a call and the wife answered. We congratulated her for winning the tickets and she instantly started crying. She did not stop crying for at least 30 seconds. After a while, I asked what was wrong. She collected herself and said that today was the anniversary of her two baby boys passing away.
This story is what motivates my business partners and I to continue to work on improving our company every single day.
