BY: GRIFFIN RASCHE, DM6 PR & MARKETING DIRECTOR
It’s been exactly one year since I experienced my first Big Event as an executive member. (Yeah, you read that right.) Since then, I’ve realized this…
People need other people.
Here’s the truth. Each one of us gets a single shot at life. Every day we wake up consumed by new, daunting tasks. But, do you ever stop to wonder what your purpose in life is? I know my mind tends to revolve around this question quite often, still.
In May 2017, my outlook shifted in the form of a class assignment. It featured one of our newest additions to the SAUDM family this year, Everett Kerres. I wrote, produced, and edited an in-depth feature story about how Everett, although given a grim diagnosis at birth, is continuing to defy the odds of spina bifada.
During the interview process, it was heart-wrenching to hear his mother’s story – explaining the financial, physical, and emotional drain it had on her and her family. She expounded on the importance of having a support system and how that got her through most days.
So, I knew this: I wanted to help more families like the Kerreses. Dance Marathon was my outlet to do so. Then, I was blessed with the title of PR & Marketing Director my senior year at St. Ambrose.
I remember listening to my first ever family talk on a Fundraising Push Day. Standing in front of a slideshow of baby pictures, one parent discussed how SAU DM had totally altered the way their child acted in the presence of other people. How his life and the lives of their whole family changed after the first Big Event they attended and the admiration they have for the people in this organization.
The only thing I could think was “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here, right now.”
Just the power of being there for someone, giving your time and showing up is what it means to be a part of the SAU DM family. It didn’t take me long to figure that out. I have seen sickness, I have seen death, but most importantly, I have seen the power of love in all of that.
I want to ask you, are you currently participating in something that makes your soul burst with happiness?
If not, this is an invitation to step outside of your comfort zone.
An invitation to be someone’s support system.
An invitation to live a life you are proud of and are so madly in love with.
An invitation to join the St. Ambrose Dance Marathon 7 Big Event.
It is up to you, and only you, to decide what path you want to take. Decide that for yourself today: would your future self thank you for this?
I think so.
